chooralamallandslideKalpetta: The activities of various voluntary organizations are giving hope for the progress of the survivors of the Chooralmala-Mundakai landslide disaster, and coordination of organizations is necessary to make rehabilitation more efficient, said the Review Summit organized by the People’s Foundation. Six months after the Chooralmala-Mundakai landslide disaster, a review summit titled ‘Choralmala-Mundakai: Survival, Rehabilitation’ was held at KM Holidays, Kalpetta. Political leaders, NGOs, public representatives, media, religious organizations, and representatives of affected families participated in it.
Inaugurating the program, T. Siddique MLA said that voluntary organizations worked faster than the official systems in the rehabilitation of the affected people. He also said that the Geo-mapping carried out by the People’s Foundation in the disaster area was helpful in determining the extent of the disaster and in selecting beneficiaries for various organizations.
Dr. S. Muhammad Irshad, Associate Professor of Disaster Management Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, who participated in the program, said that rehabilitation plans should be formulated by considering the opinions of the people and voluntary organizations beyond the government systems. He said that disaster warning systems should be strengthened in areas like Wayanad and local social and media groups should be used for this.
